SUMMER CAMPS

Safety & Supervison

Medical

Keats Camps is accredited by the British Columbia Camping Association. During the summer, we have a team of Registered Nurses who take turns providing coverage for the camp. These nurses are at camp to administer daily medications and to be a motherly figure to our campers. They are experts at comforting kids when knees get scraped or when a bout of homesickness hits!

In addition to our RNs, several of our staff members have been trained with their Occupational First Aid Level 3 (OFA 3). At least one of these staff members is on the island at all times, allowing for prompt medical aid if it is needed.

Our transport time for minor injuries to St. Mary's Hospital in Sechelt is approximately 45 minutes. For more serious injuries, we have procedures in place that allow us to have patients transported to an ambulance in Gibsons within 15 minutes of first-aid arriving on scene. We are also registered with the BC Ambulance Service to receive support from an air ambulance in order to transport patients directly to hospitals in the Lower Mainland, including BC Children's Hospital. If a camper has a severe illness or injury the camp will notify the parent or guardian as soon as possible, however we will ensure the camper's urgent medical needs are looked after as the first priority.  Generally once the patient is ready to be transported and is deemed to be in stable condition, we will contact the parent or guardian right away.

Waterfront

All of our lifeguards are National Lifeguard Service certified and campers are not permitted to take part in any waterfront activities without a lifeguard present.

On the first day of camp, campers are required to take part in a swim test. The lifeguards will assign colour-coded bracelets to the campers based on their swimming ability. Based on the outcome of this test, some campers will be required to wear lifejackets on the waterfront docks at all times.

No matter what their swimming ability is, all campers must wear a lifejacket if they leave our docks or the enclosure of our "pool". This includes all children participating in wakeboarding, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, wasping and snorkelling outside of our pool boundaries.
