At Keats, we strive to offer a high standard of living tour campers. Campers in the main camp live in cabins that are completely set up with electricity and plumbing. The washrooms have two showers, two toilets, and two sinks to ensure that the personal hygiene needs of every camper are met. At nighttime, there are lights that can be left on in the washrooms to facilitate middle-of-the-night expeditions.
Typically there is a maximum of 10-11 campers per cabin and two counsellors who sleep with the kids. Although all of our camps are co-ed, cabins are either uniquely female or uniquely male. We have 6 brand-new cabins that were completed in time for the summer of 2006, and in 2009 will be commencing re-build on 1 of our 3-cabin cluster buildings. We hope to have it finished in time for summer 2009.
In Adventure Camp, the campers are housed more rustically. They sleep in tents that are erected on tent platforms a few feet above the forest floor. Washrooms are outhouses, although a flush toilet is available at the main camp, which is only a few minutes away. Hot showers are also available, although typically Adventure campers are a rustic bunch and may only take one mid-week shower augmented by frequent ocean dips!
If you have requested that your child have specific cabinmates, we will try our best to get them in a cabin together. Our initial priority is to make sure that each child is placed with their first request for cabin mates. After that, if your child is coming to camp with a large group of children, we will attempt to place them all together. Please note that sometimes groups must be split up because the number of children becomes larger than our cabin capacity. If you would like to request a change in your child's cabin mate requests, please advise the North Vancouver office in writing (email is fine) at least two weeks before your camp session begins.
Keats Camps has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying! If our staff members recognize a problem, we will deal with it swiftly and efficiently. We encourage any children who are involved in incidents, or who see them to report them to their counsellor so that we can step in and help to get the situation resolved, and the bullying behaviour stopped.
Sunscreen:
Summers at Keats can be very sunny! Over the course of the day, counsellors will remind campers to put on their sunscreen, however we cannot force anyone to cover up. Despite our most persistent efforts, some children will not wear sunscreen. Please spend some time with your child before camp instructing them on the importance of sunscreen and how to put it on.
